This is the most recent illustration I've done for Amelia's magazine. It's about the current financial system, and how we're in for a rough ride. Actually a very interesting article, which was written by Amelia Greggory after attending the Automatic earth Lecture. So go have a read:

updates

I ordered a load of lovely pocket mirrors from http://www.awsomemerchandise.com/ . I was honestly really happy with the price, service and quality, so as soon as I've got some spare cash I'm going to get some more stuff printed up.
I also have been volunteering a few quick illustrations for Amelia's magazine online, these are the latest: for the tatty devine, supermarket Sarah party, I'll post the link when it's live. (2nd image)

I also submitted some illustrations for the Amelia's compendium of fashion illustration book which is due out at Christmas.
I did three fashion illustrations of the s/s range by ethical designer Pia Anjou, her work is right up my street, gorgeous, so that's why I chose to illustrate it. I painted on wood, just because its such a nice surface, and because I wanted an earthy organic aesthetic. (1st image)

a few photos from my final show :)

Thursday, 3 June 2010

OK so..I've now almost finished uni, handed in all my work, just have to get stuff ready for my final show and get my feedback at some point.
I thought I might give out my website address...which I've had since Christmas(!) but didn't feel ready to publish. so here it is..still not quite finished, but it will do for now. I'd like to get a bit more creative with it, so am planning on learning website design, so that I don't have to use a web template ala..Mr site.
Also, if you're local to Birmingham, then you might want to pop down to the sauce gallery in the custard factory this weekend for the rookie arts exhibition, the weather will be lovely and you'll get to see lots of work by young Birmingham artists including myself.
this is the twitter page: http://twitter.com/rookiearts

I'm going to hit you with some of the work I've been doing for my final major project.
I have done the terrible thing and gone to bed at ten o'clock two days before my work is due in..shocking, and I still have loads to do, but I'm completely out of steam so oh well!

last spread minus text

Monday, 26 April 2010

A tiny sample of an image I'll use for my dream time book..I'm hoping it all works out, but really not sure at the moment. this is plywood with watercolour birds and white acrylic detail. i like the translucency in some areas, which hopefully supports the dream time idea. I'm desperate to put some colour in..but It might confuse the story, so I'll keep you posted!

Saturday, 3 April 2010

Early draft of the first double page spread of my dreamtime book...I'm using blurb to print it...and I feel like I'm going to have to learn the layout tricks the hard way!

aaaanyway, need to sort things like wording, text and maybe sort that ugly blur on the left where I've stretched the whole thing to make it fit the page...

a bit of experimenting with the dreamtime theme..everything in the dreamtime started out grey, and was gradually coloured by the ancestoral spirits. I'm going to try to do a big landscape using pencils and neon paint.

My major project was based on dreaming..but recently its evolved into a look at the Aborigine idea of 'dreamtime' which is related to the creation and the value of nature. There are loads of dreamtime stories from different parts of Australia which explain some of the concepts. I've started illustrating the first story, which is called 'how the birds got their colours', and I'll probably have a go at a couple more, producing paintings and illustrations.
Above are mock samples of the birds story, trying to work out compositions. The colours are something I'll need to look at, i think I'm going to paint on dark grey (maybe paper maybe plywood), then add a few more neon's into the leaves and branches. They will be big..so I probably wont be able to scan them in, but i'l get them up somehow when they're done. :)

this is me...kind of, it wasn't supposed to be a self portrait...but i needed a model and had no one to hand..so i had to draw my self! ugh.
for the benefit of my poor tutors i made the eyes slighlty bigger, and the nose a touch smaller, as you do :)

A first mock for my uni project based on the ycn ted baker brief...I've adapted it to suite my negotiated project, so it's not exactly the same. Needs a lot of work!

Have a look at this blog, the creator is a textiles design/management student and I cant wait to see what she comes out with! I love the black and white designs...

This is a mock-up for a uni project to make in store illustrations and installations for paperchase...this would probably go behind the till, and would be large scale. I want to put some paper mobiles above it, suspended from the ceiling. I need to work on the typography, but it's a nice quote:) William Wordsworth. I used neon paint but it doesn't show up :( I think I'm going to have to make it a bit less sickly looking ...
